Blog » Downgrading Firefox 3 to 2 in Ubuntu 8.04

Publication Date: Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Who already used Ubuntu 8.04 might be realized that it comes with the newest version of Firefox.

It might be useful for somebody, but I had some problems using it because actually it is a beta release. For example, Firefox's Eclipse integration is not ok with the firefox's beta version. I had some problems with Java plugin. So, I decided to back the the last stable version.

So, when I tried to unistall firefox3 and install firefox2 I was unable to do.

Take a look at the code below to understand what happened.

oalexandrino@oalexandrino:/usr/bin$ sudo apt-get install firefox-2
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package firefox-2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package firefox-2 has no installation candidate
oalexandrino@oalexandrino:/usr/bin$

I was unable to do install it! It wasn't got by apt-get.

After some time googling, I could understand why it happened.

Just after I upgrade from Ubuntu 7.04 to 8.04, not just firefox2, but many other packages weren't got via apt-get.

Here the reason that a friend in a forum told me:

"The problem is you're running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), but your repositories are mainly for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)."

If you have this problem, you can understand better how to fix it by taking a look at the posts that I have posted in the Ubuntu Forum. Here it is:

Firefox-2 is not available for ubuntu 8.04

After I have done the steps that the guy told me (see the posts in the forum), I run the commands above again, now they worked correctly!
